In 2021 Argentina shipped the largest volume of grains in history

This increase in trade “led to a strong increase in the demand for food that impacted both the prices and the volumes of grains sold,” said a BCR report.

“In this context, and despite the difficulties imposed by the level of the Paraná River and the productive setback suffered by some of the main crops during the last campaign, the country dispatched, from all its port terminals, grains for 60.66 Mt in in 2021, 7% more than everything shipped in 2020 and reaching a historical record by surpassing the 2019 mark,” the work specified.

Breaking down by type of grain, corn shipments totaled 38.4 Mt, more than 2 Mt more than what was shipped during 2020 (↑6%) and thus reaching the highest volume in history.

Shipments of bread wheat abroad totaled 11.6 Mt, increasing by 13% compared to the volume shipped in 2020 and just below the record for 2017.

Soybeans, meanwhile, totaled shipments of 5.2 Mt, registering a drop of 22% compared to the figure reached in the previous year.

Barley shipments totaled 2.95 Mt, a 14% improvement over the 2020 mark, while Sorghum shipments totaled 2.1 Mt, a record since 2013.

Lastly, 0.1 Mt of Sunflower were shipped from the country’s port terminals, 26% below what was registered the previous year.

Observing what is shipped by port area, it is observed that the Gran Rosario terminals are the ones with the highest participation in the total for 2021, however, it is the lowest since 2012 and the second lowest since 2006.

In recent times, the Up-River terminals (whose strong point has historically been the shipment of products obtained from grain processing, mainly flour and oil, among others) have positioned themselves as the largest gateway for Argentine cereals and oilseeds to the world hand in hand with the growth of agricultural production in the center and north of the country.

Although this continued to be the case in the last year, the ports of the region lost importance in 2021, mainly at the expense of the ports of southern Buenos Aires.

On the other hand, it is the first time since at least 2015 that a terminal of the Bahía Blanca port node is located on the podium of those that dispatched the largest volume of grains in the same year.

The hegemony of Gran Rosario was such in recent years that between 2015 and 2021 only once did a terminal from another port area sneak onto the podium: Terminal Quequén in 2016.

Finally, regarding grain destinations, Asia was once again the main destination for Argentine grains, receiving 52% of the total, equivalent to 31.8 Mt (↑ 6% vs. 2020).

In second place was America, which represented 26% of total shipments (16.1 Mt, ↑18% vs. 2020). Africa ranked third with shipments of 12.2 Mt (↑ 2% yoy) and Europe came fourth and last with 616,419 t (↓28% yoy).
