Deutsche Bahn has imposed a renovation program, and by 2027 the group should also be better off. But the path is still wide.

Deutsche Bahn brought in a three -digit million loss in the first half of 2025, but cut off much better than in the same period last year. The federal group recorded a loss of around 760 million euros after yield taxes, as the German press agency learned. In the first half of 2024, the shortfall was 1.6 billion euros. The group turnover rose to 13.3 billion euros in the comparison period, an increase of 3.4 percent. The operational loss before interest and taxes (price -adjusted EBIT) was 239 million euros. The train releases its half -year balance sheet on Thursday.

Train relies on the renovation program

The troubled railway is currently trying to get back on track with an extensive renovation program. Recently, the transport company was not only lacking punctuality in the company, it was also bad economically. In addition, there is a dilapidated infrastructure on which there is hardly any space for steadily increasing traffic.

The program should bring improvements in all three areas – infrastructure, operation, finance – by the end of 2027. This should succeed, among other things, with the extensive renovation of around 40 highly stressed routes.

Next general renovation begins on Friday

The next of these comprehensive route moderation begins on August 1st. Then the important connection between Berlin and Hamburg is completely blocked for nine months. Among rail experts, this general renovation is the first real endurance test for the construction concept, since the route is relatively long and the detour options are more difficult than in the general renovation between Frankfurt and Mannheim.

Punctuality recently under the target of the railway board

It is unlikely that after the renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin route will improve the punctuality of the railway. For this, there are probably other general renovations, in 2026 four are on the program.

From the perspective of passengers, improvement is urgently needed. In June, only 57.1 percent of long -distance traffic were reached on time, i.e. with a maximum delay of 5:59 minutes. The goal of the railway is a punctuality rate of 65 to 70 percent for the whole year.
