Summer, sun, sunshine – the desire of the vast majority of holidaymakers often did not come true this year. The hospitality feels the consequences, because the guests are not only in the beer gardens.
The mixed summer weather has affected the business of innkeepers and hoteliers in Germany in recent weeks. “The economic situation of the hotels and restaurants depends heavily on the location and especially on the weather. In many areas, changeable weather, heavy rain and storms have left clear traces,” said Ingrid Hartges, general manager of the hotel and restaurant association Dehoga, the German press agency.
Rainy weather not only meets outdoor catering, also day trips and short -term hotel bookings do not take place.
Hartges: loss of sales in the first five months
According to DEHOGA Hartges, figures for the main holiday season in July and August are not yet available. “However, a look at the first five months of the year shows a declining development: from January to May 2025, real sales in the hospitality industry were 2.8 percent below the previous year’s value,” said Hartges. The guests paid more attention to the price and bought less.
Does a weather high in August help?
“The loss of sales so far can hardly be made up for,” said Hartges. Sunny weather in August can “at least relax a little”. “Good weather makes you want day trips and spontaneous hotel bookings,” said Hartges.
