Survey: Many companies are looking in vain for trainees

Many companies have problems filling their trainees. This is not primarily due to the lack of applications – the main problem from the company’s perspective is different.

According to a survey by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), almost every second company was not able to occupy all trainee positions in the last year of training. With 48 percent of the respondents, this affects a little less than in the previous year. However, this is not necessarily good news, warns the DIHK: the companies would also have fewer jobs due to persistent problems in the search for applicants.

Two thirds take over trainees

“The companies are struggling with the economic situation, they are now often lacking financial means and clear prospects for the company,” said the deputy DIHK general manager Achim Dercks. “At the same time, the economy needs well -trained staff for a hopefully coming upturn.” Two thirds of the training companies take over their trainees.

Industry, traffic, construction and trade were particularly difficult in filling training positions. Among the companies with occupation difficulties, only a short third of the main reason gave a shortage of applications. Rather, almost three quarters stated that they had received no suitable applications.

Applicants do not bring basic requirements

Operations are particularly important for their trainees work and social behavior, followed by “basic mental performance” and basic school knowledge. However, 87 percent see defects in the training requirements, especially in the case of resilience, discipline, mental performance as well as willingness to perform and motivation.

“There is a lack of basic knowledge and competencies that are practically necessary for every apprenticeship: reliability, willingness to learn, willingness and reading, writing. “We need a focus again in schools on basic skills.”

The data is based on an online survey. According to DIHK, 14,994 companies between the 12th and 30th May.
