Switzerland was confident that the US tariffs could get away with a blue eye. But it comes much worse than feared.
Switzerland is shocked by the customs hammer from the USA. It appears on the new US list with 39 percent taxes on Swiss exports to the United States. This exceeds the worst fears. In April, US President Trump still intended 31 percent for Switzerland. The government accepts this with great regret, she said. The hoped-for agreement on a lower sentence failed to materialize, as Federal President Karin Keller-Suter wrote on the X platform.
A dial of 15 percent applies to the EU. Everything should come into force on August 7.
Threat to the Swiss economy
The Economiesuisse Economic Association spoke of unjustified tariffs that are “a very serious burden on the Swiss economy”. Switzerland is the most important foreign investor in the United States. Swiss companies created around 400,000 jobs there.
The tariffs endangered Switzerland, wrote Swissmechanic, the specialist association of small and medium-sized companies in the metal, electrical and machine industry. The business associations are calling on the government to do everything to do in the next few days.
The United States is by far the largest sales market for Swiss companies. Exports made CHF 65.3 billion (CHF 70.2 billion) last year, almost 17 percent of total exports. This is followed by Germany with CHF 45.2 billion.
