Trump’s sudden extension: tariffs on EU imports later

Again and again Donald Trump called a date: August 1st. Then new tariffs should apply to the EU and many countries. But there is a surprise.

Donald Trump waited up to the last minute: the tariffs for EU imports in the USA do not come into force on August 1st. There is a week of extension, then it should finally be so far. Trump’s time delay gives dealers, customs officials and customers time to adapt to the new rules – this is how the US government justifies its decision. In addition, however, the US President wins further time to perhaps many more deals with other countries in favor of the United States.

What do the EU Commission and Germany say?

The EU Commission did not want to publicly criticize the late entry into force of the US tariffs. A spokesman refused to answer questions about questions about the topic in Brussels. He only referred to a message from EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic on social networks. In this, Sefcovic had only looked into the future and wrote, the future customs of customs 15 percent strength for companies and trust in the transatlantic economy. EU exporters now benefited from a more competitive position.

Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) said: “For the moment I would say that it creates a period of adaptation of the new systems and specifications.”

According to a US government official, the new US tariffs for imports from abroad will come into force on August 7. On Thursday evening (local time), he continued to confirm that this also applies to 15 percent of the EU. Trump had previously signed a decree. At one point of the paper – and not prominently mentioned – it says that the rules apply one week after the signing.

So far, many thought: On August 1st it starts

After the deal between Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EU actually stated last weekend that the new 15 percent limit for almost all imports will come into force this Friday. In the course of this, in particular, it was also expected that the current special tariffs will be reduced to cars and auto parts of 27.5 percent to this sentence.

However, this is not an issue in the execution regulations signed by US President on Thursday. It is only about the “reciprocal tariffs”, which are now to apply from August 8th. Trump refers to tariffs that are intended to compensate for alleged imbalances and disadvantages for the United States in international trade.

Trump had always announced the date 1st August on his Truth Social platform in the past few weeks. For the United States, this period was also a means of pressure to conclude trade agreements. At the beginning of April, Trump had held a huge table in the camera in the rose garden of the White House. To see on it: tariffs against numerous countries with which the US government believes that the US government has a particularly large trade deficit.

In a second step, Trump then sent letters with new customs sets to increase the pressure. Countries tried in negotiations to press these tariffs. Also the EU. According to the letter, import fees of 30 percent would have come to EU products. In the end it was 15 percent after negotiations.

The White House published a list of almost 70 countries and the EU, for which certain customs sets will apply. In addition to Great Britain, Switzerland and Japan, many other trading partners are mentioned. A selection:

Land/State Community College Set European Union15 Percentage -large britain10 PRICEST WEISTION15 PROCEDITISRALE15 PRIDENTS South -south -south -Korea15 percentaiwan20 PROUNAYSIA19 Procent India25 percent

In the special case of Brazil, the White House, based on alleged trade deficits, showed a ten percent dial. In addition, the United States imposed 40 percent on a large number of products in response to criminal prosecution against Brazil’s ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. Overall, 50 percent of imports from Brazil will be due from the middle of next week.

10 percent tariffs for other countries

If countries are not listed in the list, a duty of 10 percent will be charged in your case, as the White House continued. Canada forms an exception: Trump grumbled a significantly higher customs set by decree. On Canadian imports to the United States, 35 percent should be charged instead of 25 percent.

Trump justified the step with the assertion that Canada continued to take too little against drug trafficking and that drugs reached the United States across the border. However, it is with the Canadian government with a whole series of topics in the clinch. The Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was “disappointed” about the new tariffs in a first reaction – but the Canadian government remains committed to the free trade agreement between the USA, Canada and Mexico.

An important question remains

On Thursday, appellant in a hearing dealt with the legality of many of these tariffs. At the end of May, an appellate court had initially lifted the legade of almost all tariffs of the US President who had ordered a lower instance – the Court of International Trade in New York – shortly before. There is no decision yet. And even then the legal dispute could go on – and ultimately end up in front of the highest US court.
