Donald Trump again announces higher tariffs for Indian products. He names Russia as the reason.
US President Donald Trump wants to prove India with higher tariffs in the context of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. “India not only buys huge amounts of Russian oil, but then sells a large part on the free market with high profits,” wrote the Republican on his platform Truth Social. “They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are killed by the Russian war machine.” Therefore, he would significantly increase tariffs to be paid from India to the USA, Trump announced. He wrote nothing about a concrete amount.
The US President placed his announcement before the end of a period he had set Russia. During this time, a ceasefire between Russia and the Ukraine attacked by Moscow is to be achieved. If the deadline expires without a result – according to Trump, it started on Tuesday and runs for ten days – the US President wants to impose sanctions against Russia’s trading partner.
Trump threatened India days ago
Trump had already threatened tariffs and a “punishment” for days ago. At the end of July, he spoke of at least 25 percent tariffs and the not named punishment. Trump argued: India bought a large part of his military equipment from Russia and, together with China, was the largest buyer of Russian energy. This is done at a time when the whole world wants to end Russia to kill in Ukraine. In addition, India has far too high tariffs.
With his customs threat, the US President wants to further weaken the economic basis of the Kremlin, in particular that large buyers in the energy sector such as China and India are increasingly under pressure. Russia has been waging a war against its neighboring country for more than three years.
