A newspaper report about alleged US tariffs on gold imports raised the price of the precious metal. Now the US President clarifies the facts.

A few days after a newspaper report about alleged new tariffs on certain gold imports from abroad, US President Donald Trump has excluded possible trade barriers. “Gold is not covered with tariffs!” He wrote on his Truth Social platform. A few days ago, the “Financial Times”, citing a message from the customs authority Customs Border Protection Agency (CBS), reported on new tariffs on certain gold products and thus driven the gold price up.



The “Financial Times” article suggested that gold bars with a weight of one kilo and 100 ounces (3.11 kilos) should be documented. The message in a so -called ruling letter dated July 31 and lies the newspaper, it said. In the United States, these serve to clarify trading policy by the customs authority. One-kilo bars are the most frequently traded size format on the New York appointment exchange Comex.

Switzerland would have been particularly affected by such an import customs. The one-kilo bars make up a large part of Swiss gold exports to the USA. In Switzerland, the size formats common in London are often cast into the sizes common in New York.
