The Germans have a call as a cash lover. However, according to a survey, however, the appearance and coin are no longer the first choice.

For most Germans, Cash is no longer King for most Germans: Both at home and abroad, only a third of people fall back on appearance and coin for paying, as a survey for the comparison portal Verivox showed.



In the prior survey in the summer of 2023, a majority of the respondents (53 percent) had stated that they preferred to pay a purchase worth 20 euros at the cash register on foreign trips within the euro area. According to their own statements, only a good 34 percent of 1,031 respondents use to appear and coin in such cases.

Card payment abroad favored even more often


“The Germans have always been a cash lover. But now the majority of consumers preferred payment methods supported both in Germany and abroad,” says Oliver Maier, Managing Director of Verivox Finanz comparison GmbH.




With a good 51 percent within Germany, a card prefers to pay at the cash register: Around 30 percent use the Girocard, which is often called EC card, 12 percent numbers with a debit card from Visa or MasterCard, in which the purchase amount is debited from the account immediately after payment. A real credit card is the most popular means of payment for a good 9 percent of those surveyed.

Abroad is even more common than in Germany the favored payment method: within the euro area, this applies to almost 55 percent of those surveyed, according to the survey, it is a little more than 56 percent.
