Volkswagen celebrates 1.5 million electric cars of a model series. VW wants to help from politics for more private buyers. Experts refer to the sleepiness of the manufacturers.
Volkswagen calls for more support from politics to switch to electromobility. “We need a clear signal and targeted government funding measures to reduce the skepticism of private buyers and to boost demand in this group,” said Sales Manager Martin Sander. The majority of the new registrations of electric cars are currently developing on commercial customers who receive other tax benefits, said Sander in Emden in Lower Saxony.
In the VW plant in East Frisia, the company celebrated the delivery of 1.5 million fully electric cars from the ID model series. Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Olaf Lies sees the car manufacturer with the work in Emden, where only e-cars are built, on the right track. “ID.7 is a strong piece of Lower Saxony and proof of the country’s ability to transform,” said the SPD politician. According to VW, the ID.7 Tourer was the most frequently approved electric vehicle in Germany in the first half of 2025.
With a view to the overall crisping German car industry, experts call the slow development of electric cars as an important factor. “The German manufacturers have overslept the trend towards electromobility,” said Frank Schwope, car expert and lecturer at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, the German Press Agency. In the Chinese market in particular, they hardly have the taste of young people or modern car buyers.
