More building permits only for single -family houses

Apartments are still a tight asset, especially in the metropolitan areas. However, a type of apartment that fits better into the surrounding area is now approved.

The authorities in Germany approved around 110,000 new apartments in the first half of the year. That was 2.9 percent more than in the comparison period of the previous year, at that time a low had been reached since 2010. The Federal Statistical Office reports. In addition to new buildings, the number also contains additional apartments in existing buildings.

The upward trend in the new building was almost exclusively reached with additional approved single -family houses. Their number rose by 14.1 percent to 21,300 units in the half -year comparison. In new two -family houses, the number of approved apartments decreased by 8.3 percent to 6,000. The situation hardly changed with the multi -family houses that were actually particularly important to relieve the housing shortages. 57,300 apartments were newly approved here.

The number of new permits gives a first indication of the expected construction activity. However, not all projects are implemented or only addressed with a delay. In the past year, only 251,900 apartments were completed and so few as since 2015. The average period between approval and completion has extended by 6 months to an average of 26 months since 2020.
