Mild temperatures at flower period favor this year’s fruit harvest. The companies expect more yield in apples, plums and plums. But there are regional differences.
The apple harvest in Germany is expected to be above average this year. The fruit growing companies also expect more yield than on average over the past ten years in plums and plums. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office based on a first harvest estimation from July.
According to this, the fruit growers are likely to harvest more than a million tons of apples for the first time since 2022: the companies expect around 1,009,000 tons. That would be 3.9 percent more than on average in the past ten years (970,500 tons) and almost 16 percent more than 2024. The conditions were significantly cheaper this year because it was mild during the flowering period and because frost and hail failed to fail in most growing regions.
Apples with an acreage of 32,700 hectares are by far the most harvested construction fruit in Germany. Almost two thirds (61.1 percent) of these areas are located in two federal states: Baden-Württemberg (11,600 hectares), especially in the Lake Constance region and Lower Saxony 8,400 hectares), mostly in the old country. In these two federal states, more than two thirds (68.6 percent) of domestic apples are generated.
Good harvest is also expected for plums and plums
The companies are also confident about the plum and plum harvest: 1.6 percent more of these fruits are expected to be harvested with 44,500 tons than on average over the past ten years (43,800 tons). The previous year’s value was 43,800 tons.
For these fruits there are the largest acreage in Baden-Württemberg (1,700 hectares) and in Rhineland-Palatinate (900 hectares). The crop expectations are opposite in the two federal states: In Baden-Württemberg, the companies await almost a third less than 2024 with 17,200 tons of plums and plums. In Rhineland-Palatinate, on the other hand, the relatively small amount of previous year should be exceeded by almost half.
