The largest hop growing area in the world is located in Hallertau in Bavaria. After two lousy harvest years, things went better with Germany’s hop farmers. But the industry puts a strain on a trend.
Due to relatively good weather, Germany’s farmers harvested significantly more hops than before. The harvesting amount had risen by around 13 percent to 46,536 tons last year, the Federal Information Center Agriculture (BZL) said in Bonn. Compared to 2022, the plus was even 35 percent. According to an industry expert, the larger range of quantities in hops does not result in the beer price decreasing, after all, other costs have increased.
Hopfen farmers are creating that fewer and fewer beer is being drunk. Beer usually consists of water, malt, yeast – and hops. A hop plant ranges for 400 to 1,000 liters of beer, it is important for the long shelf life of the drink. The world’s largest hop growing area is located in Hallertau in Bavaria between Munich, Ingolstadt and Landshut. This year’s hop harvest could start at the end of August. Only one percent of the hop harvest is used for medicines, the rest for beer.
