Study: Chinese press prices for electric cars

The EU tries to dampen the imports of electric cars from China with tariffs. But the manufacturers’ cost advantages are huge, says one expert. For local customers it could soon become cheaper.

According to a study, the Chinese car manufacturers will soon play their cost advantages on the European market. At the moment there is a tough price war on the Chinese home market to achieve a monopoly -like size as soon as possible, according to the analysis of the Institute Center Automotive Research (Car). The aim of manufacturers such as BYD, MG or Great Wall is cost and market leadership.

Due to the competition, the cars in China are offered at significantly lower prices than, for example, on the export market in Germany. The EU import duties also drive prices for prospective West: On average, the Chinese cars in this country would be provided with a surcharge of 108 percent. Chinese electric small cars are particularly expensive in this country. For comparison: According to the study, Western electric cars are only 28 percent more expensive in Germany than in China.

High costs for marketing decrease

Study author Ferdinand Dudenhöffer expects further price reductions for electric cars in Europe despite the printing of the Chinese. The Chinese carmakers could achieve their enormous cost advantages through higher quantities and in battery production. The initially high sales and marketing costs per vehicle decreased the more cars in Europe. You could also transform your cheap cost structures into new factories in Europe. China will be represented with a large contingent at the IAA mobility fair in Munich.

German and western car companies recommend Dudenhöffer to move more production to China.
