Harvest quantities recover – quality suffers from the weather

After two bad years, the farmers finally expect more harvest. But rain and drought demand their toll. The farmers do not give the all -clear.

The German Farmers’ Association (DBV) expects better grain harvest in 2025 than in the two previous years. The expected amount increased to 43.5 million tons after 39 million tons last year, the association said in Berlin.

At the same time, depending on the region and location, most of the cultures were very large. In many regions, the quality also suffered significantly under weeks, sometimes very intensive precipitation.

“Noticeable consequences of climate change”

Association President Joachim Rukwied described this year’s grain harvest as a tremor. Ripe grain had to stay on the field longer, which in places led to significant loss of quality. At the same time, there is a loss of yield in the northeast due to pronounced drought.

“Even if the harvest is finally in the average area again, it makes it clear again the noticeable consequences of climate change,” said Rukwied.

“Catastrophic pricing” brings farmers problems

He was concerned about the current market situation: “The still catastrophic prices – especially on the grain markets – are increasingly bringing us to farmers.” An improvement has not yet been in sight.

The DBV harvest report is a extrapolation and is based on reports from the 18 state farmers’ associations about the actually harvested areas and achieved earnings.
