The United States Department of the Treasury announced the imposition of sanctions against Russian persons. This became known on Tuesday, February 22.
According to the list of persons subject to restrictions, they include Denis Bortnikov, son of FSB director Alexander Bortnikov, Vladimir Kiriyenko, son of the first deputy head of the presidential administration, Sergei Kiriyenko, former Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, and head of Promsvyazbank, Pyotr Fradkov.
US President Joe Biden announced the sanctions on February 22. He announced at the White House special measures against Russia’s sovereign debt. According to the American leader, the new restrictions will exceed the sanctions imposed in 2014. The new restrictive measures are expected to come into force on Wednesday, February 23. The US President also noted that this is only the first tranche of sanctions against Russia and Washington may tighten sanctions depending on Moscow’s actions against Kiev.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called the new Western sanctions against Russia illegitimate.
Such a reaction from the West was caused by the signing on February 21 by Russian President Vladimir Putin of decrees recognizing the independence of the LPR and DPR and treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. On February 22, the Russian leader signed federal laws on the ratification of friendship and cooperation treaties with the DPR and LPR.
Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the intra-Ukrainian conflict.
