One of the most difficult jobs: train is looking for a new tip

The search for a new train manager is running. The Minister of Transport is confident that they will soon be able to present someone. But the criticism of his approach remains.

Who will head one of the most criticized corporations in this country in the future? Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) is at least confident that they will soon be able to present someone for the top of Deutsche Bahn. “I have the impression that there is enough interested parties for this and our task is among those who are available to choose the best to choose the best in our view,” said the CDU politician on Wednesday evening in Kröv in Rhineland-Palatinate on the sidelines of a summer trip to journalists.

Around a week ago, the minister surprisingly announced for many that the current railway chief, Richard Lutz, would have to vacate his post. From the new government’s point of view, it is not the right one to cope with the profound crisis of the federal group. In the coalition agreement, the three government parties had therefore agreed to reorganize the railway board.

New strategy on September 22nd

On September 22, Schnieder wants to present a new strategy for the troubled group. The corresponding staff should also be presented in this time framework, said Schnieder – “maybe a little earlier, maybe a little later”. A week ago, the minister said: “Ideally, we can present the or the new CEO with the strategy in September.”

Until a successor is found, Lutz should remain in office. The search has been in full swing since then. The Supervisory Board of the Bahn has commissioned external so -called recruiters and headhunter to find suitable candidates.

Possible successors have already been mentioned. This includes, for example, the railway regional transport officer Evelyn Palla or the previous head of the infrastructure subsidiary DB Infrago, Philipp Nagl.

In addition, according to media reports, there are already canceled – for example from the former head of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, Peter Füglistaler, or Andreas Matthä, currently head of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Also, the short -term finance minister Jörg Kukies (SPD), who recently announced, has no interest in the job.

Amazing in the industry

In the railway industry, some are still surprised why Minister Schnieder Lutz has already announced Lutz, although no successor has yet been established. “The train is in a dramatic location and a long leadership vacuum. Nobody can afford. Neither the passengers nor the rail staff and ultimately not the Minister of Transport itself,” says Martin Burkert, the chairman of the railway and transport union (EVG). The minister must now act consistently and make a good staff proposal.

“In any case, Federal Minister of Transport Schnieder puts the time of the decision under additional pressure to quickly present a successor,” says Dirk Flege, Managing Director of the Allianz Interest Association. “The public debate should not be about calling and burning one potential name after the other.”

Schnieder, in turn, defended the decision on Lutz against criticism that he had not yet been able to present a successor. “You can’t keep such a process of looking for personnel under the ceiling. And I find it unfair to the person who is still in office if you experience something from the press from the media.” That’s why he was looking for direct conversation.

One of the most difficult jobs

Bahn boss: This is one of the most difficult jobs that are currently to be awarded. He or she is the focus of politics and the public, should the industry and the system to know railway and have management experience in a large group.

Schnieder said that the head of the railway is one of the most challenging tasks in the German economy, which is also related to the special structure. When asked what role the salary is playing, he said that what is paid elsewhere in Dax groups is not paid for the train. “But I don’t have the impression that you become the CEO at Deutsche Bahn.”

It will not have an easy successor

Whoever succeeds him or she will have a hard time. The train is in the deepest crisis in its existence. Punctuality in long -distance transport is more bad than ever since the rail reform. The infrastructure is considered a dilapidated and completely overloaded. The group has also been burdening losses and a billion -dollar debt mountain for years – even if it could be reduced somewhat by selling the logistics subsidiary DB Schenker.

So not everything was done with new staff, Schnieder made it clear. The switch is not overturned. The minister referred to the coalition agreement and structural reforms on the train. Until the end of the year, a large part of what was done should be at least in implementation. The train is a very complex company. Passengers can currently sing a song of this.
