At the end of August, new strict customs regulations for package shipping to the USA are reaching. But how exactly should that work? Many questions are still unanswered, so postal services pull the emergency brake.
Due to new customs regulations, DHL significantly limits the package shipping from Germany to the USA. The Bonn group, which also occurs in Germany under the Deutsche Post brand, announced that only packages are promoted there for the time being, which are declared as a gift and whose content is only worth up to $ 100 (currently around 86 euros). Parcels of private individuals who are more worth can only be sent to the USA as more expensive express programs from Saturday. This is the case with all packages of business customers from Tuesday.
“The majority of the private customer packages to the USA is just $ 100, so private customers are comparatively little affected by the new regulations,” said a DHL spokesman. He emphasized that the restrictions should only be temporary. How long is unclear. Previously, other national postal companies had taken the same steps, such as the Austrian Post, the Belgian BPOST and the Swedish-Danish Postnord.
According to the decree of US President Donald Trump, duty-free for goods imports with a value of less than $ 800 will be abolished from August 29th. Customs of $ 80 to 200 should be due per article. The communication of DHL said that essential questions were still unclear, “in particular how and from whom the customs fees will be collected in the future, which additional data is required and how data transmission to the American customs authority should be carried out”.
