ID card will soon become more expensive

A new ID card costs 37 euros, but the Ministry of the Interior would like to raise this fee soon. The background is the cost of the federal printing company – and digital photos.

The costs for applying for an ID card should increase soon. This was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior to the “Heise” portal. A corresponding “regulatory procedure” is already underway, said a ministry spokesman.

The Ministry of Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) did not say how many more citizens will have to pay in the future. So far there has been no information about the time of the price increase. So far, 37 euros are generally due for a new ID card. The ID is then valid for ten years. People who are younger than 24 get the document cheaper. So far, you have paid 22.80 euros, but have to renew the ID after six years.

Production costs at the federal printing company have increased

The price adjustment is justified with increased costs at the Federal Printing. Since August 1, municipalities have had to pay 4.90 euros more per ID card, which they order from the print shop in Berlin. At least part of it should be passed on to the citizens. This wants to “hold the financial burden on the municipalities justifiable,” said the “Heise” ministry spokesman.

The increased product prices are also related to a further change in the identity card: Since May 1st, no paper photos have been assumed for new ID cards, only digital passport photos are allowed. For this purpose, the citizens’ offices are equipped with photo stations by the Federal Printing. Citizens have to add six euros to the costs for the application of the ID application if the biometric images are made in the authority.

ID card is mandatory from the age of 16

Finally, the fee for the “Perso” 2021 was increased – from 28.80 euros to 37 euros. Germany is thus in a European comparison in the upper third. Some EU countries even make the ID cards completely free of charge. If you also want to save at least a little in this country, you should hurry – as long as the ID card still exists at the current price.

The needy can also get the ID at reduced prices or even completely free of charge. At least for adults to do without the ID card is not an option: Every German citizen aged 16 and over is obliged to have an identity document.
