Takeover of the Lürssen military promotions? Talk about conversations

Are there any conversations by the shipbuilter with other armaments companies? The group is silent – but the company comments on possible changes to the employees.

The Bremen Schiffbauer Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL) intensifies discussions about possible consolidation. This emerges from an internal letter from the group to the workforce. Previously, “hard point”, “picture” and other media had reported on plans by the armaments group Rheinmetall to buy the military promotions from Lürssen. Both companies initially did not comment on it.

Schiffbauer informs employees

However, NVL turned to the employees according to DPA information. “The recognition that we now receive in the course of the tightened threat situation in the Defense area speaks for itself,” says the letter to the employees. At the same time, the industry was asked to think about “what our navy and our country now need to increase its defense, quickly”.

Against this background, the group decided to “intensify consolidation talks with possible partners,” the letter continues. If the talks lead to a specific result, NVL will inform the employees.

Rheinmetall is silent about the plans

Rheinmetall also keeps silence. “We only talk about when there are decisions,” said CEO Armin Papperger at the inauguration of the new artillery work on Wednesday in Lower Saxony. “Rheinmetall is always interested in expanding its product portfolio,” he added in general.

According to media reports, the Düsseldorf armaments group would like to acquire the military area of NVL and thus open up an additional business area. So far, Rheinmetall has not built ships, but is already doing business with the navy, for example with ship guns and with laser modules.

Compilations have been subject for a long time

The private shipyard group Lürssen has been divided into the NVL marines since October 2021 and into a yacht division. The NVL specializes in the construction and production of naval and authority ships for German navy and customers worldwide. In Germany, four shipyards belong to NVL: the Peene-Werft in Wolgast (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), parts of Blohm+Voss and the Norderwerft in Hamburg as well as the new Jadewerft in Wilhelmshaven.
