Nexperia-Coo Kempe does not consider a global market share of 20 percent to be possible in semiconductors by 2030. What reasons he calls and how he evaluates the domestic chip industry.
According to the Nexperia manager Achim Kempe, the EU will miss its goal to have a fifth of the global semiconductor market in 2030. “We can no longer create the goal if we are honest,” said the operational managing director of the semiconductor element producer Nexperia of the German Press Agency in Hamburg. There is an important location of Nexperia.
A world market share of the EU of 20 percent is “utopian,” said Kempe. The EU is miles away from this. In the USA, China, Taiwan and South Korea, too much money was invested in order to be able to catch up with the gap.
In addition, the assembly and test area at the end of the production chain is almost exclusively in Asia for cost reasons. “And I don’t see that this will change in the near future,” said Kempe. Nexperia is represented with works in China, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Kempe is not alone with concerns
In December, the Association of the Electrical and Digital Industry had already warned that the EU’s goal was not to be created without much more funding. According to the association, the EU market share was 8.1 percent at the time.
In April, the European Court of Auditors then expressed the assessment that the EU would miss the 20 percent goal. The Court of Auditors justified the assessment, among other things, with inadequate investments.
Nexperia manager praises domestic industry
Despite the doubts about the EU goal, Kempe praised the semiconductor and chip industry in Germany. This is well positioned. Among other things, he referred to the factories under construction in and near Dresden. “Compared to other countries in Europe, we are certainly the country whose chip industry is by far the most advanced in Europe,” said Kempe. However, industry will remain globally.
The old federal government has reached a lot for the semiconductor industry, said Kempe. “We are hopeful that the new government will pursue this course.”
Nexperia has its headquarters in Nijmwegen in Dutch and belongs to the Chinese company Wingtech. Because of his Chinese corporate mother, Nexperia was excluded from EU funding in 2023.
