People have to work more and longer – this is repeatedly challenged in view of the shortage of skilled workers. But many employees see it differently.

A majority of employees no longer want to work – and does not consider it necessary. This is the result of a representative survey of 2,000 employees in Germany on behalf of the Xing career network. Instead, about two thirds stated that they preferred to work less.

In view of the lack of specialists and demographic change, experts and politicians repeatedly demand that people in Germany should work more and longer. Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) had recently spoken out for this.

Multi -work is too stressful to many

However, according to the online survey, 64 percent of the respondents between the ages of 18 and 65 do not consider additional work to maintain prosperity – and thus a little more than a year ago, as 58 percent of the respondents, the opinion. 60 percent also spoke out against working more themselves, and the 55- to 65-year-olds were even around two thirds.

The respondents primarily cited stress, too little time for themselves and the hobbies as well as too little time for care work, family, friends and relatives. 67 percent said that they wanted to reduce their working hours, the 25- to 34-year-olds (74 percent) did above average.

That could motivate employees

But what could move people to work more voluntarily? In the survey, the employees stated that they did not want to work less that they would do so for financial reasons and fun with their job. The respondents commented similarly to incentives for voluntary additional work: The strongest motivation is therefore bonus payments and premiums, followed by a significantly higher salary, additional vacation days and tax incentives.
