The Schwarz Group and the discounter Aldi are only strongly represented in Germany, but now also worldwide. In a ranking, they are among the top ten of the largest retailers.
The Schwarz Group with its subsidiaries Lidl and Kaufland and the discounter Aldi have maintained their place among the ten largest retailers worldwide.
In the “Global Powers of Retailing” ranking published by the management consultancy Deloitte, the Schwarz Group took fourth place as the largest German retailer, as in the previous year. Bigger were only the US retail giant Wal-Mart as the undisputed number one, the Internet giant Amazon and the US chain Costco. As in the previous year, Aldi took eighth place.
The supermarket chains Edeka and Rewe took 17th and 18th place in the global ranking, Metro 44th, the electronics retailer Ceconomy with the Media Markt and Saturn chains two places behind it in 46th place. The mail order company Otto took 75th place, the drugstore chains Rossmann and dm secured places 92 and 96.
According to Deloitte, the 250 largest retailers worldwide generated sales totaling USD 5.11 trillion (EUR 4.5 trillion) and thus sales growth of 5.2 percent. “Despite the difficult conditions caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, global retail is demonstrating resilience and has grown even more strongly than in the previous year,” said Deloitte expert Karsten Hollasch.
The strongest sales growth among the corporations included in the ranking was shown by Amazon at 34.8 percent. However, the Schwarz Group, Aldi, Edeka and Rewe were also able to increase significantly with growth rates of between 8 and 10 percent. With the online retailer JD.com, a Chinese company made its way into the top 10 of the world’s largest retailers for the first time.
