More part -time, less full -time – this trend continues. But there is another record.
As many employees like ever before, part -time work in Germany. In the second quarter, the part-time quota rose to a new record value with 40.1 percent, the Nuremberg Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Research (IAB) said. Accordingly, the number of part -time employees increased by 1.3 percent to 16.971 million compared to the previous year, the number of full -time employees fell by 0.7 percent to 25.352 million.
In the 1990s, part-time was still the exception, said IAB expert Enzo Weber. Today it is normal with 17 million employees. According to the evaluation, part -time employees work with an average of 18.62 hours a week. Full -time employees worked on average 38.31 hours a week. One reason for the high part -time quota and the increased weekly working hours during part -time employment is, according to the experts, that industries such as care and education with a high part -time share have grown.
Employment record, but less full -time jobs
According to the IAB, the number of workers increased minimally to 46 million in the second quarter compared to the same period last year, but stagnated in the season and calendar compared to the first quarter. “Even after two years of recession, there is a new employment record, but the full -time jobs are already under maximum status,” explained Weber.
At the same time, the number of employees with a part -time job increased by 2.5 percent compared to the previous year to 4.64 million. The development follows the long -term upward trend, it said.
