The Lufthansa pilots are preparing for a possible strike. The background is a stuck negotiations on company pension schemes and a smoldering large conflict in the group.
At Lufthansa, the pilots are ready for a strike. The collective bargaining commission of the Union Association Cockpit has declared the negotiations on company pension scheme failed and has already applied for the original vote for the union board. This emerges from a letter to the members, which is available to the dpa news agency.
It is not yet clear whether and when there is a new pilot strike on the deficient Lufthansa core brand. Most recently, VC organized a one-day strike at the Lufthansa Kerngesellschaft in 2022.
Interest risk shifted to employees
The VC had asked Lufthansa to negotiate the company pensions and so -called transitional supply in May. However, the conversations remained with no result. Around 4,800 employees are affected. According to the VC, Lufthansa has not made a substantial offer. According to a spokesman, the company initially received no information on the failure of the talks. One could therefore not comment on the process.
At a tariff in 2017, the pilot union had agreed that Lufthansa no longer guarantees the absolute amount of the pensions, but only the amount of employer contributions. The interest rate risk went to the employees. In addition, the average age for transitional care was raised by two years to 60 years of life. According to reports, the earnings were left behind the expectations formulated at the time.
Large conflict in the background
In the background, a large conflict also smells around the various German flight operations in the Lufthansa Group. The board of directors around the chairman Carsten Spohr founded the companies City Airlines and Discover with the stated goal of flying to cheaper tariff conditions than at Lufthansa Classic and its regional subsidiary Lufthansa Cityline.
For this purpose, collective agreements with the competing union Verdi have already been concluded, while the VC division unions were left out for the pilots and UFO for the cabin staff. These want to prevent more and more aircraft and thus jobs from being relocated to the younger and cheaper companies.
