For years, diesel and petrol engines were pillars of the tail unit from the German automobile manufacturer BMW in Steyr for years. In the future, the business will not be distributed over two, but on four legs because further technologies are added: First, BMW, as reported, opened a new chapter in Upper Austria on August 1st with the production of electric motors.

Second, hydrogen drives in Steyr will also roll off the assembly line from 2028. This was announced by the BMW tips on Wednesday in the work in the presence of state politics and representatives of the group headquarters in Munich. The schedule is tight: in 2026 assembly areas will be rebuilt in the factory, in 2027 the production of the pre -series begins, in 2028 series production. A drive is installed from 150 individual parts. BMW invests 50 million euros, in a first step there will be 50 employees in the “high-tech manufacturer”, as the group calls it. BMW works with Toyota from Japan during development.
Prototypes of the hydrogen drives are already being built in Munich and Steyr. The Upper Austrian location takes over the development services that are necessary for later series production. This also includes heat management, control units or air control.
“Not everyone in the industry assumes that the hydrogen car is part of the mobility of the future. We are convinced of the hydrogen,” said Klaus von Moltke, plant manager in Steyr and in the BMW group for drives. He kept covered with quantities on Wednesday.
