Application record – more foreign professional qualifications recognized
Nurses, doctors, engineers – foreign specialists are needed to meet the need in Germany. The number of recognition increases significantly, especially in a medical profession.
In Germany, more and more foreign professional qualifications are being recognized. Last year, according to the Federal Statistical Office, the authorities approved 79,100 applications – a fifth (21 percent) more than in the previous year. Since the beginning of the joint recording of federal and state law regulated recognition proceedings in 2016, the number of recognition has more than tripled, it said.
At the same time, in 2024 the number of ongoing recognition procedures achieved a record with 95,500, as the statisticians continue to report. This more than doubled the number compared to 2016. From business and politics there are always demands to recognize foreign professional qualifications faster in order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers.
Türkiye and Ukraine in front
With 9,200 recognitions, Turkey remained the most represented training state in 2024, followed by Ukraine. Here, the number of positive procedures has more than doubled to 6,400 compared to the previous year. Tunisia, India and Syria follow, while the numbers for Bosnia/Herzegovina and the Philippines sank.
Most approved recognition procedures revolved around medical professions as in the previous year. In first place with 32,500 recognitions and a share of 41 percent of the permits were nursing staff – an increase of 19 percent. Doctors and engineers (4,400) followed with 11,000 recognitions.
