Billion order for Siemens Energy at Ostsee project

The energy technology group Siemens Energy has landed a billion dollar order. The company is said to deliver converters for a Danish-German electricity project on Bornholm in Baltic Sea.

As part of a Danish-German electricity project on Bornholm’s Easterneinsel Bornholm, the energy group Siemens Energy has won a large order of more than one billion euros. The company is to deliver four converter for the so -called “Bornholm Energy Island” (at), as the responsible transmission system operators 50Hertz and Energinet announced. On the island there is a current turning cross that forwards offshore wind power from the Baltic Sea to Germany and Denmark.

“In addition to the investment design, the contract, which has now been concluded between Energinet, 50Hertz and Siemens Energy, includes production, transport, installation, testing and commissioning until the mid -2030s,” said 50hertz, which supervises the project on the German side.

The project had recently stalled

The co-project, which cost around seven billion euros, had recently stalled. It is planned that the stream from Bornholm via sea cable with a performance of 2 gigawatts (GW) will be led into a future substation on the Greifswald Bodden. A 1.2 GW line should also connect the interconnector to the Danish island of Seeland. Despite the lower performance towards Denmark, the costs were distributed on the German and Danish side. Therefore it was renegotiated.

Energinet now receives an EU funding of around 645 million euros. “These funds primarily serve to reduce the Danish investment costs, since the larger proportion of the electricity produced in the wind farm in front of Bornholm will flow to Germany in the future,” said a joint message.

The German Federal Government also assumes liability if no electricity can flow to Germany due to a disorder or due to maintenance work due to the international offshore network connection. “Such a guarantee is the prerequisite for a successful tender for the wind farm space in front of Bornholm and can generally lead to efficient offshore networking between the North and Baltic Sea states,” said 50th chief Stefan Kapferer.
