According to a study, the acquisition potential of certain population groups is far from exhausted. What role childcare and professional qualifications play.
With the transition of the birth -strong vintages of the 1950s and 1960s into retirement, the number of people of working age in Germany will decrease significantly in the coming years, according to the Federal Institute for Population Research (BIB). Even a very high net immigration of over 450,000 people by 2035 could not completely prevent the decline annually, Bib director Katharina Spieß warned.
A possible solution to relieve the problems: use the acquisition potential of the people living in Germany better. Because that is far from exhausted, says the expert. More employment, especially of women and the elderly, could “cushion” the expected shortage of skilled workers and labor, she summarizes the results of a BIB study as a demographic shortage of skilled workers.
Childcare and recognition of degrees as a problem
According to the study, there are significant scope, especially for women – and especially in mothers – which are restricted in childcare care by an inadequate offer. Additional opportunities could also be opened up in women with immigration history through simplified recognition of professional qualifications. Safety seekers from Ukraine also bring qualifications that are urgently needed in many bottleneck professions, especially in the nursing and health sector as well as in the craft, the BIB director said.
The BIB, based in Wiesbaden, is a research institution of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and examines the causes and consequences of demographic change with the aim of political advice and the public information.
