The US tariffs make the export of German cars more expensive to the USA. So relocating production to North America could be financially worthwhile. This is what Porsche says about corresponding speculation.

The German sports car manufacturer Porsche has initially granted a car production in the USA. Despite the export costs increased by the US tariffs, the company is very satisfied with the current origin of the vehicles, said North America boss Timo Resch to the “Handelsblatt”. “That is why there are no immediate or concrete plans to get into local production.”

When asked about other options, such as a production in an existing work of a VW subsidiary or a pure final assembly of finished parts in the USA, said Resch: “In our view, there is no concrete plans and no direct need for both.” This is also due to the fact that the number of Porsche’s quantities is significantly lower than with Audi. “This is why local production, from a current status, does not make any sense.”

Why produce in the United States at all?

The tariffs for auto imports raised by US President Donald Trump make the sale of German cars in the USA much more expensive for manufacturers. There is still a outdated duty rate of 27.5 percent. However, it should fall retrospectively to 15 percent in retrospect – still more than before the trade conflict. How expensive the tariffs the carmaker get did not say, but it was “a significant amount”.

Industry experts expect production relocations from German car manufacturers towards the USA in the medium term.
