Higher tariff brakes: Exports to the US

Higher tariff brakes
Exports to the United States have been falling to the lowest level since the end of 2021

Despite difficult conditions, the United States is the most important buyers for German goods. But business has been going badly for months. And that’s not the only problem for Germany’s exporter.

The business with the important US market is becoming more and more a burden in view of higher customs hurdles for Germany’s exporters. Most German exports went to the United States in July. However, there was the fourth monthly decline in a row, as the Federal Statistical Office announced – and the lowest level since December 2021.

With a value of 11.1 billion euros, exports to the USA in July were calendar and season-adjusted 7.9 percent lower than in June 2025 and 14.1 percent less than a year earlier. The business with China and the United Kingdom also ran worse in July.

Mixed July balance

Overall, according to the preliminary results of the Wiesbaden statisticians, “Made in Germany” worth 130.2 billion euros were delivered abroad in July. That was 0.6 percent less than in June of the current year. Compared to the same month last year, there was an increase of 1.4 percent.

At 115.4 billion euros, imports to Germany remained almost unchanged compared to the previous month (minus 0.1 percent). Compared to July 2024, the statisticians calculated an increase of 4.3 percent.
