Cyprus: Strike disturbs air traffic – over 50 flights affected

A three -hour strike paralyzes air traffic in Cyprus. Around 15,000 passengers are affected – what is behind the protest?

Due to a nationwide strike, travelers in Cyprus have to adapt to considerable impairments in air traffic. According to the operator company of the Larnaka and Paphos airports, around 50 flights and 15,000 passengers are affected at noon. With the campaign, the unions demand the full and automatic inflation compensation, which has only been paid to two thirds since 2023.

The work of work lasts from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (local time) and also affects schools, public transport and parts of the healthcare system. Critical infrastructure such as power supply, water, telecommunications and emergency services continued to work with emergency personnel.

The background is a fixed dispute between unions, employers’ associations and the government on the future of automatic inflation compensation. After failed negotiations, the talks should be resumed with the mediation of the Ministry of Labor.
