Rainy July presses the number of overnight stays

Bad weather, empty beds: In July, many hotel rooms remained free. What this means for the tourism industry and the annual balance.

The holiday month of July literally fell into the water in Germany in large parts – this is also the press: with 56.7 million guest accommodation, 1.2 percent less was counted in the month than a year earlier, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on the basis of preliminary figures. Hotels and guest houses housed both fewer guests from domestic (46.2 million overnight stays) and from abroad (10.5 million overnight stays).

Despite the decline in summer, the previous annual balance sheet is comparatively good: in the first seven months of 2025, a total of 279.9 million overnight stays. That was only slightly less (minus 0.2 percent) than in the record year 2024, when 280.4 million overnight stays were in the books from January to July.

Accommodation companies such as hotels, inns and guest houses with at least ten sleeping facilities or campsites with at least ten parking spaces are taken into account in statistics.
