Negotiations again, this time in Madrid: The USA and China want to talk about tariffs again. This time there is also a social media app on the agenda.
The United States and China want to negotiate again in its further smoldering customs dispute in the coming week. As the US Ministry of Finance announced, the head of government Scott Bessent in Madrid will speak to representatives of the Chinese side. Among them is Vice Prime Minister He Lifeng, who had already had the previous discussions for the People’s Republic.
At first there was no confirmation from Beijing. According to the US announcement, Bessent wants to talk about questions about economy, trade and national security. It is also supposed to be about the TIKTOK social media app.
It was initially unclear when the talks were planned. Bessent wants to travel to Spain and Great Britain from September 12th to 18th, as his authority announced. Several media had unanimously reported that the meeting should fall into the coming week.
Deadlines extended several times
The two largest economies in the world had recently extended the break in their customs dispute by 90 days. The talks in Madrid would now be the fourth in the dispute after the meetings in Geneva, London and Stockholm.
In addition, the question of the sale of the Tiklok social media app in the USA is urged. A deadline for a deal for Tikok sales extended by US President Trump expires on September 17th. Because Tiktok belongs to the Bytedance group based in China, there is concern in the United States that the Chinese government could get American users via Tikok and manipulate public opinion in the country through the app. Tikok rejects this.
