EVP boss Weber announces withdrawal from burners

The head of the Christian Democratic Party alliance wants to secure jobs, strengthen the auto industry and test new technologies. This should also take right populists out of the sails.

EVP boss Manfred Weber has announced that the one decided by the EU will be withdrawn from the end of internal combustion engines. “I promise the Europeans from the burner out,” said the chairman of the European People’s Party of the “Welt am Sonntag”. A proposal should be presented in autumn. Weber emphasized that he wanted to stick to the goal of climate neutrality, but the way there had to remain open.

Weber presented the newspaper a “four-point car promise for Europe”. In addition to taking back the burner, he calls for a virtual auto university, the use of “AI gigafeBriken” for vehicle development and test regions for new technologies such as autonomous driving. He also wants to intensify the dialogue with employees of the auto industry.

“The ideological mistakes of the past legislative period have to be corrected,” said Weber and called on the Social Democrats to support. “It is important that we secure jobs in the auto industry and win the workers for us.” In this way, the rise of right -wing populists may slow down, according to Weber.

The background is an EU regulation of 2023, which provides for a reduction in car emissions by 100 percent and thus in fact means that for combustion engines. According to “Welt am Sonntag”, the head of the French car supplier Valeo, Christophe Périllat, advocates a reduction in the quota to 90 percent. This would continue to enable the use of plug-in hybrids and range extenders.
