Tesla plant manager sees “positive trend” for Grünheide

In Germany, sales of Tesla vehicles recently decreased. The Gigafactory work chief in Grünheide is confident for the factory and refers to more than 30 markets.

The US electric car maker Tesla sees “very good signals” for the location in Grünheide despite difficult market conditions. “We have a very good current sales situation and therefore also corrected the production planning for the third and fourth quarter again,” said plant manager André Thierg to the German Press Agency.

“(We) take a look at how the market is developing and still see positive signals for all markets we supply,” said the plant manager of Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg. “Of course, this goes far beyond Germany. We supply in significantly more than 30 markets, and definitely see a positive trend.”

Sales decline in Germany

The German market remains difficult for the car manufacturer. While significantly more electric vehicles in Germany were approved in August compared to the same month, the sales of Tesla vehicles decreased, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority. Around 1,400 Tesla vehicles were newly approved, almost 40 percent less than in the same month. In addition, the Chinese competition with electric models in Germany is increasingly fitting.

The sales of electric cars had broken down last year due to eliminated grants. The coalition of the Union and SPD in the federal government had agreed to promote e-mobility with purchasing incentives. It is clear so far: The purchase of a pure electric car should become more attractive for companies.

Work chief wants clear signal for e-funding

Now there is a debate about an end to the planned EU burner ban from 2035. The Tesla workers’ head warns the federal government of such a discussion and sees a danger to the e-car industry in East Germany. Throughly demands a clear signal to promote electric cars.

Since March 2022, electric cars have been officially produced in the factory in Grünheide near Berlin. According to the company, around 11,000 employees work there. Environmentalists have great concerns because part of the factory is in the water protection area. A planned expansion of the work on the existing area with the construction of new buildings is initially on ice due to the market situation, and an expansion with a freight station is also planned.
