In the past, the pension certificate with the paper scissors had to be cut out of the pension notice. In the meantime, it comes directly in a practical check card format. Since July 2020, the pension certificate has been automatically sent to each new player by welcoming the “Pension Service”. It does not have to be applied for.

It is a foil -reinforced paper ID, on which the name, date of birth and pension insurance number are entered. It is also planned to introduce a digital pension ID that can be carried out on your smartphone. However, the start date of the digital pension card has not yet been determined.

Pensioners can ride a cheap bus and train in many places. Many transport companies offer special senior monthly tickets or other discounts for public transport. In some cases, the cheaper tickets are linked to the pension status, which can be detected with the pension ID, but sometimes only a certain age. The latter also applies to Deutsche Bahn train tickets. The railway offers discounted single trips and senior train cards for people aged 65 and over.

At many cultural events there are reduced admission tickets for pensioners. For example, this can be the case in the theater and the opera, in the cinema or at concerts and sporting events. Museums and exhibitions also often have cheaper tickets on offer-from Hamburg’s Miniature Wonderland to the German Museum in Munich. Pensioners also pay a reduced entry in many zoos, swimming pools and amusement parks.

There are numerous offers for pensioners in adult education. Numerous adult education centers not only offer special courses for seniors, but also provide pensioners reduced fees in the complete course program. Pensioners can also take part in the courses at many universities as part of a senior degree.

The library ID card can also be cheaper: pensioners pay a reduced annual fee in many public libraries. Some libraries also offer computer courses or other offers especially for seniors.

Shops, online shops or local pensioners also offer cheaper prices. Some restaurants have discounted “senior citizens” or “senior portions” on the menu. According to a market check from the consumer advice centers, around every fifth restaurant offers smaller portions of regular main courts. However, only a part of it is explicitly awarded for seniors, and here, too, the waiter will hardly request a pension certificate.
