Measure against housing shortage: Spain strokes more than 50,000 illegal apartments

The Spanish government wants to have more than 53,000 illegal holiday apartments deleted from the online platforms. These apartments would soon be fed to the regular housing market and were available to the “young people and the families of our country”, said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at an event in Málaga.

According to Sánchez, they are apartments that have requested the mandatory registration number since July 1, but do not receive them because they do not meet the legal requirements. There are particularly many cases in Seville, Marbella, Barcelona, ​​Málaga and Madrid.

According to its own statements, the Ministry of Housing has already notified the various platforms for holiday apartments so that they can remove the offers of these 53,876 illegal accommodations from their portals.

More and more protest against housing shortages and mass tourism

Sánchez said that the project was part of a strategy of his left -wing government to bring living space back to its actual function, contain illegal tourist rentals and improve the quality of life in the cities.

Spain experiences an apartment shortage that gets worse from year to year. Among other things, the tenant associations and other organizations are responsible for the increasing number of holiday apartments. According to an estimate by the statistics authority, this was a good 400,000. According to the authorities, growth rates of up to 15 percent are registered annually.

At the beginning of April, tens of thousands of all over the country under the motto “we put an end to the living space” protested against the increasing housing shortage. The demonstrators called for an end to real estate speculation, more social housing and an end to the conversion of living space into holiday apartments. Also protested against mass tourism is repeatedly protested in the popular holiday destination.
