For butter, customers had to dig deep into their pockets at discounters and supermarkets a year ago. Now the retailers reduce their prices again. Which chains pull with?
The butter prices for consumers in Germany continue to decrease. Large retail chains reduce the price for a 250-gram pack of German branded butter of their own brands by 20 cents or around a tenth to 1.79 euros. This was the result of a survey by the German Press Agency. Other butter products should also be cheaper.
At first the discounter Lidl had declared to lower butter prices. This started a spiral: Aldi North and South, but also Edeka, Rewe, Netto, Norma, Kaufland and Penny also announced lower prices for their own brands. If individual food dealers permanently reduce corner price items such as butter, others usually follow quickly.
Price high a year ago
Butter prices have been falling again since the beginning of February. Previously, the price for the cheapest packet of German branded butter had climbed on a high. In October 2024, customers had to pay 2.39 euros – more than ever. According to experts, the reasons were smaller amounts of milk supplied by the farmers, and a lower fat content in raw milk. In the summer of 2024, the blue -tongue disease led to the break -in of milk yield in affected animals nationwide.
There have been large price fluctuations in butter in recent years. In the summer of 2023, customers had to pay EUR 1.39 in most shops for a parcel of their own brand butter in most shops. The shelf prices for comparable products from brand manufacturers are always higher.
