The earth’s gass stores have long since reached the level of 70 percent of November 1 – and continue to fill up. The operators still see “clear risks” – when it gets very cold.
According to the memory operators, the filling of the German gas storage is on the right track. The current level is 75 percent. With the booked capacities, a level of 81 percent can be reached by November 1, the Energies initiative said (Ines) in Berlin. This level offers safe gas supply in winter at normal to warm temperatures.
In extremely cold temperatures, however, the association still sees “significant risks”. On the one hand, the reason for this is a higher gas consumption that has been observed in the past two months. “On the other hand, the filling of the gas stores in other European countries is progressing more slowly, which eliminates the positive effect of higher German fillers.” If this scenario occurs, the memory in Germany would be completely emptied at the end of January 2026. “The current consumption patterns could no longer be fully covered in such a scenario,” warns the association.
Fill levels 70 percent reached at the end of August
Gas wholesalers use memory to sell cheaply purchased natural gas at another time – for example in winter when the need is large. A regulation stipulates that the memory must have an average level of around 70 percent on November 1st. This requirement had already been reached at the end of August. In the balance, the level in Germany has increased continuously since July 9th.
Germany receives most natural gas via pipelines from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium. According to the Federal Network Agency, 15 percent of the overall imported total amount came into the country via the German LNG terminals.
