Russia is fully self-sufficient in the main types of food – grain and its products, meat and fish products, sugar, vegetable oil and other key food products. This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Agriculture on Friday, February 25.
The Russian production of dairy products, vegetables and fruits already provides a significant part of domestic consumption.
The department noted that the need for imported goods is insignificant and mainly falls on products that are not produced in Russia due to climatic conditions. At the same time, Russian importers work with a wide range of supplier countries.
“Thus, the domestic market is reliably protected, and food security risks are excluded,” the ministry stressed.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia reported that consumer market enterprises in the country are working regularly. Particular attention is paid to retail chains and shops in the southern regions – Rostov, Voronezh, Belgorod regions, Krasnodar Territory, Crimea and Sevastopol.
Large federal and regional chains have created and regularly renew inventory in stores and distribution centers for the main socially significant categories for at least 40 trading days. Groceries are stocked up for 50-70 days, hygiene products – for more than 70 days. If the need arises, trade enterprises are ready to organize work to speed up the delivery of goods to stores, the ministry stressed.
For operational management, there is a headquarters, which includes representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, federal and regional retail chains, and regional ministries of trade.
In the context of the observed foreign political tensions, many Russians are worried about their economic well-being. For example, on Thursday in a number of banks there was an increased demand for cash currency. However, economists interviewed by Izvestia said that there is no need to worry about food. Agricultural production in Russia continues to grow. Thus, imported buckwheat occupies only 0.3% in the market structure, and since 2014 the volume of imported cereals has decreased nine times. At the same time, in case of an emergency, the state has significant food reserves.
The day before, the Russian stock market sank amid the announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin of an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass.
On February 21, Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the LNR and the DNR. Also, the Russian leader and the heads of both republics Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin signed agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. The documents were ratified the next day by both the republics themselves and the State Duma.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout the state.
Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to this conflict.
