A Europe-wide service provider for check-in and boarding at airports has become the victim of a cyber attack. BER Airport in Berlin is also affected.
A cyber attack results in delays at Berlin Airport BER. A service provider for the systems for passenger handling was attacked on Friday evening, as the airport announced. The airport then cut the connections to the systems. Passengers must now expect longer waiting times for check-in and boarding and delays.
“The airport itself was not the goal of the cyber attack and only affected it indirectly,” said the airport. The system bidder is used at airports across Europe. In addition to Berlin, other European airports are affected, there is a confirmation of this from Brussels Airport.
The airports Frankfurt and Hamburg reported in the morning not to be affected. The operation runs normally, there are no restrictions.
Cyber attack: Significant effects possible
The Brussels Airport said on its homepage said that there is a significant impact on flight operations. Several European airports are affected. London Heathrow Airport said that there could be delays, but spoke of a technical problem. It is unclear which other airports are affected.
From Brussels it was said that due to the attack, only manual checking in and boarding was possible. The service provider try to fix the problem as soon as possible. There will be delays and flight cancellations. Passengers should check their flight status at the airline before they arrived and plan enough time at the airport, it said.
Heathrow only announced that a third-party provider for check-in and boarding systems of several airlines had a technical problem. It will be worked on as soon as possible.
