Preparations for the new military service at the Bundeswehr are on the Federal Department of Defense. The military leadership already finds more interested parties.
According to General Inspector Carsten Breuer, the Bundeswehr recorded an increased interest in military service. “We made a clear leap forward. Compared to the previous year, 15 percent more young people chose voluntary military service,” said Breuer to the German Press Agency in Berlin.
The Bundeskabinett has decided to draft a new military service. If the Bundestag agrees, the law should come into force on January 1, 2026.
Bundeswehr has almost achieved this year’s goal
Especially from the Union, doubts have been repeated whether a sufficient number of future soldiers can be gained with the combination of military recording, sample obligation and voluntariness. In contrast, SPD defense minister Boris Pistorius recently said: “We have targeted 15,000 this year and have now reached almost 13,000 in August.” The aim is to have 30,000 annually by 2029 and then have trained 110,000 military service providers.
“We drive up all the capacities that you can start up. Everyone is clear that we urgently need the young men and women who come to us through the new military service,” said Breuer. “We face a threat that we have to counter.” The Bundeswehr currently has a total of 20,000 places for the existing, voluntary military service that could be used. He assumes that military service providers could still be trained in the existing structures in the coming year. He said: “And” In the following years, for example, we will also use reservists as trainers, we will evaluate in the next few weeks. “
“Entry gate” for long -term service
The threat situation makes it necessary to keep up with the operational readiness. Then he paid attention to it. “A commander of a fighting tank is either in preparation for the battle on the NATO east flank and trains his crew. Or he is a group leader in basic training and provides military service providers,” said Breuer. And: “Both do not work at the same time. Finding the right balance is what is important now.”
He assumes that the new military service will also commit more men and women as time and professional soldiers: “For many, the entry gate was also the military service for many. Many have come to the Bundeswehr and then committed themselves longer, even though they would not have thought at the beginning of their military service. Why should it be different today?”
