China wants to do without advantages in world trade

It sounds technically: China wants to do without a special regulation of the WTO. But it is interesting why China wants to give up these advantages – and to whom this signal could apply.

In the future, China plans to do without a special regulation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) reserved for developing countries. The announcement underlines the use of the People’s Republic to support the multilateral trading system with measures, said China’s international chief negotiator in Beijing.

The so -called special and differentiated treatment (SDT) of the WTO provides developing countries and enables them to fix higher tariffs, or gives more time to implement agreements. Although China is the second largest economy in the world, the communist leadership in Beijing on China’s self -explanatory status is a developing country. The United States in particular has been criticizing this for years. The People’s Republic generates a lot, but the per capita income is still relatively low.

Announcement shortly after phone call

China had already announced the decision the day before in the context of tariffs and endangered interests of developing countries. On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Li Qiang China presented as a “responsible main development country”.

The announcement follows a phone call between US President Donald Trump and China’s head of state XI Jinping for a few days. Observers see a signal of Washington in the ongoing trade dispute of the two major powers but also to other regions in Asia, South America or Africa, to which China has been redirecting its exports for months because of the trade disputes.

Criticism of the USA from Beijing

The rule -based multilateral trading system is currently facing major challenges, said Li Chengang. The commercial and customs war that “a certain country” started damaged the interests of WTO members, seriously disturbed the world trade and brought uncertainty into global development.
