Interview in custody: Ex-Wirecard boss wants to work again

Ex-wirecard boss Markus Braun has been in custody for over five years. The Austrian manager continues to insist on his innocence – and makes plans for a life in freedom.

Former Wirecard boss Markus Braun gives himself hope for a new life after detention: “I still feel a lot of strength and energy in me,” said manager, who has been in custody since summer 2020, in an interview with the “Stern”. “I will definitely devote myself to new topics and work into old age,” the Austrian replied when asked about his future plans. “I’m looking forward to that.” He believes: “The art of life is to make every situation the best possible.”

Interviews of prominent examination prisoners are extremely rare but not prohibited. The former billionaire Braun is the main defendant in the mammoth process that has been running since December 2022 for the alleged billion -dollar fraud at Wirecard. “The process was a farce right from the start,” said Braun of the Munich judiciary. Braun has argued since the start of the trial that he had been innocent and even deceived by the real perpetrators: a gang around the dipped former sales board member Jan Marsalek and the co -accused Oliver Bellenhaus. For his part, the latter levies serious accusations against Braun and has accused the former CEO in the process of spreading a sacrificial myth. The public prosecutor has also rejected Braun’s allegations of not properly investigating.

Braun still hopes for acquittal

“It is undeniable that an unforeseen setback, a black swan, hit me with a existential force,” said the formerly of many small shareholders as a visionary brown to the “star”. “But that won’t stop me from getting up again.”

He still strives for an acquittal: “Yes. Of course,” he replied in the interview to the corresponding question. So far, the judges have not indicated that they think brown innocent, which indicates, among other things, the ongoing custody. Braun described the five years behind bars as “absolute borderline experience”. The judges would like to speak the judgment this year. So far, evidence has not been completed, appointments for pleading and judgment have not yet been set.
