Merz wants to tip burners

Chancellor Merz has not yet expressed himself so clearly. Next week he wants to do it on the EU summit.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) wants to tip the combustion engine planned for 2035 despite the persistent concerns of the SPD coalition partner. “I also advertise among the heads of state and government of the European Union for promoting the EU Commission that we cancel this ban on combustion,” he said in front of entrepreneurs at the “Black Ecosystem Summit” in Berlin. He has not yet commented on this topic so clearly.

Technologies would have to be approved, such as so-called range extenders, which increase ranges in electric cars via small combustion engines, said the Chancellor. This also applies to hybrid drives that combine a usual combustion with an electric motor. “It is fundamentally wrong if the state unilaterally specifies technologies that have to be achieved or have to be banned at a certain point in time. Both are wrong,” emphasized Merz.

The Chancellor made it clear that he wants to address the combustion championship at the EU summit in Copenhagen next week. In 2022, it was decided that from 2035 no new cars with petrol or diesel engine should be approved in the EU. The aim is to lower CO2 emissions in the traffic sector. The Union is against the combustion championship, in the SPD there are concerns about a lifting. But there are also increasingly voices there for a departure.
