Around a week after a cyber attack, the state of emergency at the capital airport BER stops. The passenger and luggage handling does not work yet – patience remains in demand.
Travelers need a lot of patience at the capital airport BER because of the effects of a cyber attack on an IT system. The system for passenger and luggage clearance does not work around a week after the cyber attack. Passengers have to expect longer waiting times. “We are working step by step out of crisis mode,” said a spokesman for the airport in the morning.
According to Airport, a total of around 72,000 passengers are expected on Saturday, and 90,500 on Friday.
The airport service provider Collins Aerospace had been the victim of a cyber attack on Friday last week. Several airports were affected in Europe. The hacker attack paralyzed on the electronic systems that are used for passenger and luggage handling.
The check-in switches are affected. According to the Airport, passengers can use the more functioning self-service stations with machines in the airport. The luggage can also often be abandoned at machines.
IT experts work on restoring the systems
In the meantime, 20 IT experts from the service provider Collin worked around the clock to restore, said the airport spokesman. A temporary alternative system was also brought up for the luggage clearance. Nevertheless, a number of passengers still have to wait for their suitcases because of the failure.
There are passengers who are now also trying to take their task baggage through security control, said the spokesman. “You can’t just keep suitcases with you. This is not permitted.”
