A good week after a cyber attack on the systems of passenger and luggage clearance there are still waiting times and individual flight cancellations at Berlin Airport. When does everything run smoothly again?
At the capital city airport BER, travelers have to continue to prepare for delays and individual flight cancellations because an IT system still does not run after a cyber attack a week ago. There is an exceptional situation, said an airport spokesman.
On Sunday, eight arrivals and six departures were canceled on Sunday. A total of around 600 flights were planned for 88,000 passengers. When everything works again, the speaker did not give a forecast. It could take several days.
Service provider victim of cyber attack
The airport service provider Collins Aerospace had become the victim of a cyber attack on Friday last week. Several airports were affected in Europe. The hacker attack paralyzed on the electronic systems that are used for passenger and luggage handling.
The check-in switches are affected. According to the Airport, passengers can use the more functioning self-service stations with machines in the airport. The luggage can also often be abandoned at machines.
System must be rebuilt
In the meantime, 20 IT experts from the service provider Collin worked around the clock to restore, said the airport spokesman. The system had to be built up completely. A temporary alternative system was brought up and running for luggage.
