Family Minister Prien knows the problem from her own experience: So far, independent women have to make provisions for maternity leave. That should change in the future.

For self -employed women, the right to statutory maternity protection could bring a little closer. “I assume that we will submit a proposal to the parliament at the beginning of next year,” announced Federal Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) in an interview with the Editorial Network Germany (RND). “But the implementation is still unclear.”



In the coalition agreement, the Union and the SPD stated that they wanted to “examine and other suitable financing models” in a timely manner and other suitable financing models in order to enable independent mothers in the future.

Minister was also affected


Prien told the RND that they were financed by a levy for employees, but they would not be available in the case of self -employed people. “A comparable levy for the self -employed would also be an additional financial burden. I don’t want to. So we have to find other financing channels. It is not easy,” emphasized the minister, who was once affected. “As a self -employed lawyer, I was also not entitled to maternity leave at the time. I had to finance the time from savings.”

So far, the Maternity Protection Act only applies to employees, trainees. Self -employed, on the other hand, can only secure themselves voluntarily in order to receive replacement for the loss of earnings in the six weeks before the birth and eight weeks after – for example through private health insurance or voluntary protection in statutory health insurance.
