In autumn, many drivers are at dusk – exactly when deer and other wild animals are very active. The accidents are increasing.
Car accidents with deer, deer, wild boar and other animals now cause damage of over one billion euros. In 2024, German insurers paid a good 1.1 billion euros for 276,000 game accidents across Germany, as the entire Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) announced. The average amount of damage per collision with a wild animal was 4,100 euros – 250 euros more than 2023.
The reason for the message: Wild accidents are increasing in autumn every year when the days get shorter. Many wild animals are active at dusk and then cross streets. The GDV blames both the rising prices for body parts and higher workshop costs for the increasing damage. “Since these higher repair costs are not only reflected in game accidents, but in the case of almost all damage in car insurance, the car insurers have made losses of around five billion euros in the past two years,” said Anja Käfer-Rohrbach, the deputy general manager of the association.
